چکیده

Thin films of the organic molecule perylene-3,4,9,10tetracarboxylic-dianhydride ("PTCDA") on graphite(0001) have been investigated from the monoto the multilayer regime with low energy electron diffraction (LEED), X-ray-diffraction in Bragg-Brentano geometry, and high resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). These different methods proved epitaxial growth in a coincident superstructure and yielded congruent results concerning details of the crystallographic structure of the epilayer. In addition it was possible to resolve submolecular structures in high resolution STM images; a comparison of the 10 resolved maxima of the tunneling current with the molecular structure leads us to question the conventional model description of tunneling.

STM investigations of PTCDA and PTCDI on graphite and MoS2. A systematic study of epitaxy and STM image contrast

Monolayers of the organic molecules perylene3,4,9,10-tetra-carboxylic-dianhydride (PTCDA) and -diimide (PTCDI) on graphite and MoS 2 have been imaged with scanning tunneling microscopy. The epitaxial growth of the two molecules is determined by the intermolecular interaction but nearly independent of the substrate. On both substrates the STM image contrast in the submolecularly resolved images ...

Lateral ordering of PTCDA on the clean and the oxygen pre-covered Cu(100) surface investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy and low energy electron diffraction

We have investigated the adsorption of perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride (PTCDA) on the clean and on the oxygen pre-covered Cu(100) surface [referred to as (√2 × 2√2)R45° - 2O/Cu(100)] by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and low energy electron diffraction (LEED). Our results confirm the (4√2 × 5√2)R45° superstructure of PTCDA/Cu(100) reported by A. Schmidt et al. [J. Phys. ...

Characterization of tungsten tips for STM by SEM/AES/XPS

For the first time, both X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES) techniques were applied in analysis of surface contamination of electrochemically etched Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) tungsten tips. Carbon monoxide, graphite, tungsten carbide and tungsten oxide were found as main surface contaminations of STM tungsten tips. The thickness of tungsten ox...

Adv. Mater. 2008, 20, 1–4 2008 WILEY-VCH Verlag Gmb Since its successful fabrication by cleavage in 2004, graphene has attracted great interest because of its novel properties and potential applications. All the existing fabrication methods, however, are limited to producing singleand multilayer graphene up to only a few tens of micrometers in dimension, which sometimes contain defects and impu...
